Soft Steinway

A warm and gentle Steinway grand piano

The story

My friend had been wanting to practice using the studios at our school recently, so he let me go in with him to sample the grand piano they have in one. We hooked up 2 Neumann M 149 tube mics, and recorded 3 round robins at 3 velocity layers. Sadly, the hardest velocity layer got messed up in recording and so did the third round robin, so we had to do away with them. What’s left is a piano lacking much dynamic range, but it gives it a really nice soft touch no matter how you play. Enjoy!

  • Probably the best piano I've ever heard in my entire life

This is probably the best piano I've ever heard in my entire life. I really like piano, I really like the steinway brand, and I've always wanted a piano that focuses more on the softer sounds. Well, what do you know. I just so happened to stumble across this instrument. Thank you Sam Knight!!!!!

  • This could be the best Pianobook Piano.

I have played most, if not all pianos in Pianobook, and I can safely say this easily belongs in at least the Top5. The resonance is incredible, the character is unique, and the entire experience is amazing. The sampling is near-perfect, especially if you consider that this is a "soft" piano, which is extremely hard to record. Absolutely incredible job - a true gift to the community.

  • Yes very good piano

Yes this is a very good Piano. Has a very piano sound that is clean soft and pure. I love it. It's just a really good piano. I like it alot. However, after some noodling with it I should say it seems like the round robins have some unpredictable dynamics to them, taking away from the playability of these really nice sounds.

  • A special library, truly

This is probably one of the best free piano libraries I've heard/played. Gorgeous attention to detail; simple and uncomplicated. "Does what it says on the tin" and does it very well. I also appreciate its size. Great job, Mr. Knight!
