Kawai Felt Piano

A Kawai upright felted and recorded with Neumann KM84’s, U47 clones, and a pair of Coles 4038 Ribbons. Two dynamic layers and two round robins....

The story

I sampled my Kawai Piano with the felts engaged for that dark, moody, quiet vibe. Neumann KM84’s provide the focus, U47 clones bring the hype and width while a pair of Coles 4038 Ribbons on the back add a nice round, clear low end. The instrument consists of 2 dynamic layers with 2 round robins and release samples. I recorded a 3rd loud dynamic layer, but was unable to make it blend properly with soft and medium samples. The loud dynamics are included if someone would like to give it a go.

  • Not sure if the pitch problems were intentional

The main distinct characteristic about this piano library is that most notes will seem very off, because they feature glimpses of their neighbour notes. Not sure if that was intentional, but it's not mentioned anywhere in the description. The white noise is minimal, but there is a release trigger that you can't control, since the GUI offers no options at all. That release also stacks up if you use the sustain pedal. If you try to play with a staccato playstyle, you will notice that the notes don't hold at all, which can be unnatural for some. All in all, nice character, but needs some work for me.

  • Would have been better with the forte layer

I think this one has a little weak dynamic range - you cannot get the forte layer by hitting hard on your keys. Yes it is felt piano, but I think it would have been even better if it has forte layer with felt. Then it should give emotional sound of kawaii.

  • Really unique tone with a lot of character

What I enjoy about this piano is that there's not a lot of muddiness and bottom end. This can tend to build up with felt piano's but not with this one. It really allows for some rhythmic parts in the bottom register of the piano that most other libraries couldn't handle without a lot of EQ.

  • A Sneak Peak Of Something Sublime

I really amazing felt piano which I believed went on with added features to become Jon's first commercial release. Beautiful soft tones but a nice clean recording, so if you want a felt but a pure one without too many quirks this is worth downloading.
