Needler was born out of a quest to find the perfect ping. After a long and frustrating process of going around banging every little household item with just about every other household item, after listening to recordings of dirty and distorted pings, the most beautiful clean ping produced itself. Needler is so named because it is the ping of a needle attached to a grounding bar, and plucked with a finger.

Needler was made, in part, as part of an old project to create a home made piezo contact microphone. The sound of Needler was also made in a song featured at the very end of the video made for that project.

The audio was recorded with a self-built piezo contact microphone and has been cleaned up and tweaked after recording. Rather than simply changing the pitch, which lengthens or shortens the entire sample, the original sample was frequency shifted to keep the original length consistent throughout the different notes. Needler also has five layers of round robin, ensuring that while the sounds are very similar it won't feel repetitive due to subtle changes between samples.
