Tatak – Felt Piano

A german upright felted with snooker baize

ByChristopher Scullion

The story

My dad got this piano for our house in about 1994 I think, he bought it for £10.

This year when I went home to visit I decided to get the piano tuned for the first time (it hadn’t been tuned since 1992). I also decided to fashion a nice strip of felt off an old snooker table and staple it to a length of wood to dangle between the hammers and the strings.
The man who tuned the piano said it’s a clunky piano because it’s German. I like how it ended up.

Recorded with 2 Line audio cm3’s into an apogee duet.

  • such a good sound

Oh I just love this sound so much, and I dunno I just saw it on some old pianobook video I happened to be watching and thought ohh that's good, and I came here and the reviews are kinda bad. I think it's awesome, I know that the abosolute/relative path thing, and some of the start samples seem a bit off, and not super dynamic, but it sounds delicious and you should have it even if it's a felt piano. I don't care it's so felty and it's a great sound and it will never die. long live tatak felt piano!! I don't even know if it has a GUI cause I can never properly load but I still gave it 3/5 for gui cause it sounds sooo good!

  • Unfortunate lack of dynamics

This is a kind of big piano library, with a hefty size of 1.2GB. I was expecting it to be a little more dynamic but it seems like it's just one layer despite the big filesize. In the lower registers you will surely notice the attack of the keys being more prominent. You can still hear it as you go higher but to me it doesn't seem that distinct, probably due to the frequencies of the sample. The noise cannot be controled since there are no options in the GUI at all. Overall it's a good sound, but be prepared for no dynamics.

  • Such a shame

Ive said in others reviews that i think its such a shame when a beautiful piano sample instrument is made with one or two dynamic layers. That is how i feel about this piano. The tone is beautiful, soft and mellow but the lack of dynamics just make it unusable for me. I haven't made any sample instruments myself so im not judging but if you're gonna go through the trouble of beautifully recording a piano and creating a sample instrument it seems like a waste to give it one dynamic layer. I would love to see an updated version of this because the tone is really beautiful.
