Soft String Spurs

A collection of three distinct viola sample instruments including harmonics and swells....

The story

Welcome to Soft String Spurs, a sample library of my viola. There are 3 main components to this collection of sounds; the Core, which has 4 dynamic layers (Levels 1 and 2 were recorded using a mute, Levels 3 and 4 were recorded without a mute), Harmonics (4 time-stretched and manipulated natural harmonics) and Swells. I recorded this diatonically, recording 4 bows per sample, using a combination of AKG C451B close and AKG C214 stereo room mics for width. To enhance the sound further, I also recorded multiple layers. Level 1 has just a single recording and Levels 2, 3 and 4 have 3, 4 and 5 layers respectively.

The samples were produced with minimal compression, EQ and reverb to allow you to have flexibility with the sound, but I must say they take very well to delay and reverb, as outlined in my YouTube walkthrough and tutorial below. The dynamics of the Core library can be faded between using the Mod Wheel and the volume for the Harmonics and Swells can be adjusted with CC21 (Spitfire’s vibrato control). The combination of these plus CC11 Volume controller allow for easy use of all three instruments simultaneously.

I hope you enjoy this submission!

  • Another great entry from Dan

Like a lot of Dan's stuff this instrument sound like its come from an extended technique library from Spitfire or whoever. Its nicely recorded and provides some lovely string texture to your music.

  • I wish I had this before I finished my album...

It's been a long time since I had goosebumps just by playing a few notes. Strings full of emotion and character that will give you the chills guaranteed. I really, really wish I had this when I wrote my concept album. One day I will remaster it and I will make sure to include this. Leaving the personal opinion aside, this instrument is very well sampled with no audible noise. There are tons of options inside to customize it to your needs, but there is no way to control the reverb completely. The knob design could have been more classical, but who cares, I will give it a 5/5 because it deserves to be at the top. Big, big thanks to Dan!

  • One of the best on the site

If you're only going to download one sample library from the PB site, this should be it. I have used this library more than nay other I've downloaded, and it never fails to inspire. These string samples are extremely well recorded, and fit so well in so many different projects. They are a joy to play, and made me an instant convert to the cult of PB.

  • Spurs to Sooth the Soul

Brilliantly soft and delicate the Soft String Spurs offer a great tool for inspiring intimate moments or to add a layer of focus to your silky strings.

  • Best Free Strings Ever

This is without a doubt the best free strings on the internet. They're so full, rich and natural sounding. They have a bit of vibrato that really brings realism also, as opposed to a lot of string ensemble patches that just feel too static. Even though i have spitfire intimate strings more often than not i still go for soft string spurs

  • Delicate and emotional Viola - swelling

Another beautiful capture of Strings - sampling his own Viola. I love how he programs the dynamic swelling sound for his library. Same with other libraries of DK, I use this library alone or mix with another collection of his and they match perfectly each other.

  • Great string textures for intimate compositions...

This is a great library for some character string textures. Throw some reverb on it and it's inspiration at the finger tips.

  • The taste of tension !

This instrument, used with a lot of reverb will make the tension goes up in a second, with the col legno and random pizzicato sounds. It's like an army of violinists coming to you walking on tiptoe, or a nice rainy day below the trees.
