Garland Ds

A choir pad great for haunting minimal tight clusters...

The story

Sometimes the simplest instruments work best.

Inspired by the soundtrack to Alex Garland’s DEVS by Ben Salisbury, The Insects, and Geoff Barrow, this very economical Kontakt instrument is a multi-sampled choir pad with me singing “D”s across my full range.

I find this is best played in haunting minimal tight clusters a la Whitacre.

Recorded into an AKG C1000S, edited in Logic and Adobe Audition.

  • What can I do with just a D?

Sure, the sound is very nicely sampled and the ambience created is great, but I can't really find a proper wayto use this. A kind of workaround is to turn the pitch all the way up to 36, so the actually Dee is not recognizable anymore, and the sample becomes a shimmery "bling" sound. Maybe I'm not creative enough for this...

  • Haunting, if minimal voices

Useful and inspiring, this sample pack really works great in intimate settings. It's also potentially useful if you're trying to record 1/26th of the 3rd Movement of Ligeti's Nonsense Madrigals: The Alphabet. :-D In all seriousness, it's a very lovely pack. It could do with some GUI controls for controlling the reverb, which I find to be a little heavy handed, and maybe even some EQ as the proximity effect is rather noticeable, especially in the lower register.

  • Sounds like Whitacre, but could use some work...

The samples in this library are well recorded and they sound nice with little to no noise. However, as a common theme among your instruments, they would all benefit from some more customizability and articulations. The release on the samples is very long, which causes them to build up and create some interesting harmonics if you play too many notes. A greater selection of vowels and articulations to choose from what also make this library more useful.

  • Works beautifully

...It works and sounds so fine. I only wish there was more range and vowels to play with.

  • Haunting Indeed

Such a simply idea, and it works so well. The sound is just stellar and sticks in your brain. I can hear all kinds of music swirling around this one sample pack. Thank you!

  • Really love this sound.

I find this 'choir' highly inspiring. For me it hits the perfect balance of intimacy, uniqueness and tone. Ash, if you're considering recording more phonemes, I'd be the first in line!
