Cello Ensemble

A dynamic cello string ensemble, designed to be played with both hands and no faders.

The story

This is my Karl Meisel cello, made in Germany in the 1990s.

I played violin as a child but I only took up cello a few years ago in my 40s, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.

I scored my first feature film shortly before sampling this instrument, and it features very heavily in the soundtrack. Apart from the emotion you can capture with a real cello, the biggest revelation has been how dynamic it is compared to a sample instrument.

So I wanted to try and capture a little bit of that here.

It has 3 dynamic layers, recorded with an SE ribbon mic through a Warm Audio preamp and a Golden Age compressor.
