Unhinged

The creaking sound from a studio door

ByKeith Theodosiou

The story

This is a pretty basic instrument that i made using the creaking sound of my studio door closing.
It was a very harsh sound so i put it in RX7 and pretended i knew what i was doing.
I then put the mellowed out sound into Kontakt and pretended even more that i knew what i was doing.
This is the result of my messing around with the original harsh creeky sound.

  • Basic Sound with possibilities

There's a lot to like about this sound. It's well recorded, and well edited in Kontakt. i appreciate that it was sampled without reverb and with a pretty fast attack. These two things make it a lot more playable. If you want reverb, you can always add it with another plug in, and if you want a super long attack, you can always adjust that within Kontakt. The gentle and pure quality of this sound allows it to fit into a wide variety of mix situations, and it's super useful. Thee's not a lot to the GUI, but that doesn't really both me as I think you can pretty easily accomplish whatever you'd like to change by digging in Kontakt or by applying external effects. Awesome work!

  • Limited Control

i actually find this sound more beautiful that eerie. It definitely can be used for suspense but i find it more ethereal and dreamy than "unhinged". Most of the time i don't mind no GUI but i think this one really suffers from not having one. For one, its absolutely drenched in reverb which was be cool sometimes but it would have been really nice to be able to control the reverb if you don't want it so wet. Also the delay as far as i can tell isn't tempo synced so you're stuck with the speed and rhythm thats programmed in. This definitely has potential but i wish there were some tweak able options
