The Janstorp

A restored toy piano from a Swedish flea market recorded with five different microphones.

The story

Way out in the ”boondocks” – as they say out west – is one of Sweden’s largest flea markets. It is open one day a year, and what a day that is.
We used to live just next door to this are and it was an event we planned our vacation around.
It would always be a perfect summer day, and billions of people in this field, and we would buy anything from farming machinery to knitted curtains or plastic toys and glass sculptures.
If you were first in a long line you could buy instruments at great discount.
I was never first in line.
I instead bought this. An old beaten toy piano.
You know how sometimes you can feel the joy in a toy? This one had LIVED, man!
Not one single key was working… 🙂

Once I restored it I sampled it using five different mics and with eight round robins.

The toy has been lost over the years, but as you play it you will be haunted by warm and carefree summer days and a lot of laughter. Enjoy!

  • Completely Love This

It's got a big unique sound. There is plenty to play with in terms of mics and effects. Quite good quality, bright and clear. I have a handful of other toy pianos, none of them provide the depth of sound found here. I am thrilled.

  • This is amazing! ;D

This exemplifies the integrity of perfect imperfection. Built for purpose from the beginning and including the natural entropy, amazing! I am going to really enjoy catching the inspiration from this as it spirals in and out and on and off in all different directions, great job! <3

  • Flea market's hidden treasures!

Everything is wonderful about this little flea market toy piano! The sampling job is perfect, and the GUI is also very well done! I have only two comments: First, there are little to no dynamics, and the GUI labels are not clear enough for me, so I guess it would be good to have indications upon mouseovering each one of them.

  • Great attention to detail...

This is again another great toy piano library. It sounds pretty similar to the Kahyones Keys library, but the additional microphones are nice. Personally, I find there to be a little bit too much mechanical noise in this library, but that's also what gives it that nice toy piano sound. Fantastic work here!

  • Lovely Toy piano with Mic Options!

What a lovely Toy Piano library this is. The option to have five different mic choices is pretty over the top. It's useful also to have three effects to layer on. The instrument is well recorded, well, editing, and highly playable. Everything about this is just great and really well done!
