Mellora – Soft Bowed Piano (Lite)

Mellora began on my childhood piano – a 1934 Wurlitzer upright that could no longer be played normally. When the action finally failed, I didn’t want the instrument to go silent. Instead, I removed the action and spent hours exploring the strings directly, experimenting with extended techniques and capturing whatever sounds I could make from them.

During high school and college, I spent many hours recording these experiments and building an archive of many string piano techniques. What started as an old broken piano slowly became a unique sound design and sample library project – a way of preserving an instrument I grew up with.

These sounds were produced by bowing the piano strings with rosined horsehair bows at low pressure, to create a sustained pad-like tone. Recently, I revisited those recordings and restored a set of bowed samples into a playable Decent Sampler instrument. Mellora is the sound of that piano’s second life – a soft, ethereal bowed texture full of wood resonance, harmonic shimmer, and the fragile character of an aging instrument.

This Lite Edition offers a focused glimpse of Mellora’s character. It includes a reduced version of the main articulation – Sustain, along with a handful of shaping tools such as ADSR envelope, filter, chorus, and a noise layer. Even in its limited form, it carries the same aged, delicate quality of the original recordings – perfect soft ambient pads, gentle harmonic layers, and emotional underscore.
