Family Ensemble

My family vocal ensemble

The story

Ever since Jon Meyer introduced the Meyer Choir, I’ve been inspired to capture the unique character of the voices closest to me. The result is Family Ensemble – a personal, intimate vocal library for Decent Sampler.

I’m sharing this not just as a tool, but as an invitation. I hope these files serve as a starting point to encourage you to record your own family and find the joy in their unique “vocal DNA.”

The Voices:
Blend the volumes of four distinct singers (my wife, my father-in-law, my younger son, and myself) or solo them for a personal touch.
Use the “head” controls to position each singer across the stereo field.
Toggle between four different articulations: Ah, Oh, La, and Di.

The right side of the UI gives you full creative control with envelope settings, reverb, chorus, delay, and a filter.

Vocals can be tricky in a mix! For the best results, try layering different octaves and vowels to recreate the lush textures heard in the demos.

Reviews

  • Terrible but good?

It doesn't sound like a realistic choir (probably wasn't intended to) and the sound quality is very lo-fi to say the least, but I love the idea and concept behind it and its unique sonic character (perfection is not always what you need), something like early samplers meet home recording in the 80s.
I need to play around with it a bit longer, but I can see it adding an unusual touch to electronic/experimental tracks.
