Cavern Flute

A cavernous sounding flute

The story

An extremely simple instrument. I wanted to see if I could make something simple, that I could use in music production, with just 3 samples. I found a cheap yellow plastic recorder, that belonged to my daughter when she was little. I don’t remember where she got it and I don’t ever remember her playing it… thank goodness, because it sounds terrible.

But I was able to play 3 notes, adjust the pitch slightly (because the whole thing couldn’t hold a note) and layered 3 versions of each note, panned one to the left, one inthe centre and one to the right. I did this for F, A and C.

Then I brought it into Decent Sampler and added the biggest reverb and a wobbly chorus as controls. I did initially have all kinds of other controls – ADSR, Phaser, Convolution, Filters… but then I thought, when I’m making music, I don’t want to be distracted by loads of options, just one or two which I can modulate in a DAW will be best for me, and so that’s it. I simple flute ensemble, using 3 samples, that sounds like it’s being played in giant cavern.

May be useful to someone who likes cavernous sounding flutes???
