1781 – Ganer Square Piano

Virtual replica for the 1781 Ganer Square Piano

ByShyam Ananthapadhmanabhan

The story

This 1781 virtual model was developed by me for my Postgraduate (taught) Project. The samples were recorded inside the anechoic chamber at ISVR, University of Southampton, United Kingdom, where the Professor, musician and composer David Owen Norris contributed to the recordings, which were later used for the development of the instrument and for its physics-based modelling comparisons. It is a collaborative project between the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research and the University of Southampton’s Music Department.

There are 8 variations for the Ganer square piano (the dampers and buff stops):
> No dampers; no buff stop (C0 – key switch),
> No dampers with buff (D0),
> Treble damp; no buff (E0),
> Treble damp with buff (F0),
> Bass damp; no buff (G0),
> Bass damp with buff (A0),
> All dampers; no buff stop (B0),
> All dampers with buff (C1)

All these variations include their respective dynamic levels. If you want to change and if you are doing it in the XML, please update the edited code with me via GitHub and contact me via email mentioned below.

I sincerely thank,
1. Giacomo Squicciarini (mentor and supervisor),
2. Pablo Miranda Valiente (PhD Cohort – ISVR),
3. David Owen Norris,
4. Cesar Hernandez Martinez (Fortepiano.co.uk – Tuner and Piano Technician),
5. ISVR Consulting members for their kind support,
6. Nara Hahn (Cohort – Audio Group, ISVR) for supporting us with the recording equipment,
7. Riccardo Martinelli.

NOTE: the image used on the 1781 is not the actual image, and you can find the actual image of the 1781 Ganer Square piano in the same folder where you can find the “bg_image”. The image used in the sampler version is a square piano by J. Broadwood, which was estimated to have been released around the 1790s.

Thank you for your time. Enjoy:)

Warm Regards,
Shyam Ananthapadhmanabhan
