Dusty Flugelhorn

The mellow tone of the flugelhorn

ByChris Cook

The story

Dusty Flugelhorn was sampled to capture the warm mellow tone of the flugelhorn, an instrument I am incredibly fond of due its depth and character of sound.

This instrument features one dynamic layer with control over the reverb and delay, with each note individually sampled. Dusty Flugelhorn is available as a Kontakt instrument (version 6.3.1 or later), but can be easily dropped into your sampler of choice.

Signal Chain:

Yamaha 6310z Bobby Shew Flugelhorn > Sontronics Delta 2 > UA Apollo > Logic Pro

Use it to add texture to beautiful orchestral passages or as a standalone motif in something more contemporary, the choice is yours!

  • Fils a gap very well in my brass instruments colleciton

I have lots of brass instruments, but no Flugelhorn, so this fills a gap in my brass collection. Reverb and Delay controls are nice to have - really provides some inspirational ambience when I'm working on a new song.

  • A true gem

Usable brass solo instruments are hard to find. This is not only free, but it sounds superb. Playing this library I will have to say that the Flugelhorn is a vastly underrated instrument. I actually like the timbre of the Flugelhorn more than the trumpet and trombone.

Combine this library with other brass solo instruments, like the 1956 Tenor Horn that can also be found on Pianobook and create your own small brass ensemble in the box.

Hopefully we will see a version 2.0 with additional articulations. A lot could be achieved with an additional staccato type short articulation at hand.

  • A good old Flugelhorn

This is very simple and very well sampled instrument. There is not much going on though. It's not that dynamic, and the heavy attack - along with the lack of control on it - may seem less realistic if you compare it to a classics, but that doesn't mean it is bad. It's awesome and trully unique on its own ways, so I encourage you to try it yourself and see if it matches what you are looking for.
