Multiverse Mando Pads

1800's mandolin bowed and transformed into a pad.

ByJoshua Meltzer

The story

I recorded an antique Mandolin from the late 1800’s . It was a wedding gift from my wife. It is a little temperamental, playing wise but I still figure out how to make use of it.

I used a bow on it for some stuff, and long notes that I lost the attack and also reversed. I used a vintage Electro Harmonix Memory Man for some fluttering vibrato and echo. It has an organ like quality that I like. You never know where these old instruments can go!

  • Emotional and ambient pads

Emotional and ambient pads, very subdued sound. I thought about space travel when I heard the beautifully swelling sound.

  • Unrecognizable mandolin

Literally, you can't really tell this is a mandolin. Not sure if this is a good or a bad thing, because you might wanted the character of a mandolin to go through. It sounds like a very big pad. It comes with a multi that out-of-the-box is not very well set for my taste. At the same time, there are no settings to be found, except for the default Kontakt ones. The worst part is that you can't really set the release, because to me it sounds pretty long. For you it might be just right!

  • Gorgeous pad...

This is a really beautiful multi-patch instrument from David. Whilst not as playable as his other instruments it gives you a wonderful pad sound that sings in the upper range. Nice work!
