Cricket Choir

A ghostly granular choir made from...loads of crickets.

ByJoshua Meltzer

The story

Well I suppose everything in our surroundings can be an instrument. Well, why not a cricket? Or MANY of them?

These fine and talented crickets were recorded near the Berkshires in Massachusetts at night and in the woods. Non union crickets (shhh) I recorded over the course of a few nights to get a variety of performances. I then threw them in to protools, time-stretched for some granular vibe, pitched them, filtered them and added some verb. I was surprised how choir like it sounded when I layered them together. For that reason I included them all in one Multi.

Enjoy!

  • A sparkling ambient choir

It has a very beautiful texture and you can't hear the cricket-specific voice much, so this can be used just like another pad. The other day I had to de-cricket from the recordings, but listening to this library I thought I probably shouldn't have :

  • A grand pad

This pad sparkles with the promise of twilight. It is rich and warm and lovely. There are a few pops and clicks here and there, and the sounds don't loop, so if you hold them long enough, you'll hear them drop out one by one, some with artifacts at the end. However, you have to hold the notes a really long time to hit the end. Regardless, this is a really lovely pad sound, and a most worthy download!

  • Awesome sound design.

Joshua amazes us again with amazing sound design. You can acctually kind of still hear the crickets in this pad but its so transformed. It almost sounds like little singing chirps but they dont pop out too much, they just provide evolution and interest. The whole pad is super warm and balanced. Some clicks occur which can be annoying but i have isotope declick which will take care of this without altering the sound. This can be a bigger problem for beginners who dont have this plugin though
