Granular Toy Accordion

An old toy accordion recorded with a 414 through a Neve 1073, and run through various effects.

ByJoshua Meltzer

The story

I recorded this old toy accordion with a 414 through a Neve 1073. I then time stretched each note I recorded to varying degrees. I added some Eventide Blackhole and filtered to taste. I like the hint of accordion that remains while also becoming an indistinguishable sound source (my favorite kind!) Organic, warm and a bit worldly. Hope you find it useful! It’s been cool hearing what you all have been doing with my other instruments!!

  • Beautiful swelling

I think I should make music with this library soon. Very inspiring organic sound. It has a nice arc and swelling. The dynamics are gorgeous, I think it would have been better if I could control the dynamics or arc.

  • Barely an accordion, and you should get it anyway:

A swirly, fluttery mess of what used to be dry reeds is now a curious and playful atmosphere of melodic fragments. This style of instrument is something Meltzer does fantastically, and this is no exception. One of my favorite mangled / fx style instruments on the site. Try layering this not quite at the top of but just right near it on some large chords / organic wall of sound moments, that's where I love it the most.

  • I don't like acordions but I like this one!

In general the sound of the accordion sounds very weird to me, almost in all situations. Joshua managed to create one that not only I like, but that I would gladly put it in my creations.

Obviously it is not an actual accordion instrument, but more of an ambient one. What I really like about it is that if you play low, the sound is very soothing, and as you go up, the more harsh by nature frequencies spice things up.

You won't find any settings to play with, though, but it's very enjoyable as it is. The samples loop and in general the sampling job is incredible!
