Ultrasound Pad

A beautiful pad created from an ultrasound recording.

ByJoshua Meltzer

The story

I have a recording of my son’s ultrasound recording. It is a combination of his heartbeat and in utero sounds. I used his heartbeat on several recording but I thought it would be cool to make a pad out of the other sounds in the womb. Room sounds are common reverb presets, womb sounds not so much 🙂 I digress. I took a long clip of sounds which actually had a tone to it.I loaded it in to ProTools, pitched it to C , threw it in Reaktor and processed and manipulated it in “Forms”. I used some Space Master Delay as well as Replika. As many of you, I basically start going down a sonic rabbit hole and see where I end up. This one ended up sounding warm, ethereal and almost organ like. By the way, My son approves of this instrument and exploiting his prenatal self, for the good of composers everywhere.

  • How to capture a soul?

Ask Joshua, he's done it. I don't really have much to say. This is a minimalistic pad that breathes life, both figuratively and literally. Props to Joshua for having such a creative idea, and the heart of sharing this part of his to the Pianobook world.
