The story

The inspiration for this instrument came from a “flickering synth” sound I have always loved in the first 30 seconds of the track “Sé Lest” by Sigur Rós. I have spent years trying to work out what was making that mysterious sound, until I decided to try and make it myself. “Granular Flickers” is my interpretation of that sound.

To make this instrument I started by creating a synth patch on my Korg Monologue XD module, I then played each individual note via an arpeggiator to create a looping “Morse code” effect. I then put each note separately through a granular processor.

This is the first sample instrument I have ever made. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I did making it!

  • Stunning sounds right out of the box!

I loved this instantly when I beta tested it and it's even better now! You don't need to do much to have instant vibes with this. With a short attack and release, you can get evolving textures that give me goosebumps. Set the attack and release to maximum, cutoff at about 12 o'clock, and add as much reverb as you can to get some lovely, ethereal pads. Playing with the cutoff knob in that scenario can really bring some nice movement to the pad. Just to echo what Sam said in his review, a high pass filter would indeed be nice on this. Well done! Looking forward to more instruments from you! :)

  • This is so unique, I love it!

I haven't heard something like this before, it sounds so nice, it's easy to use and I can't wait to use it in a song. Thank you!

  • Gorgeous Noise

The interface may be basic but the tones that this instrument produces are lush, complex, and beautiful. One of the best sounding instruments I have found on Pianobook.

  • Very inspiring swarms!

This is a very simple swarm patch that features a very warm synthetic sound. The sampling is amazing, the options provided are more than enough, and the overall result is incredible and very inspiring to my ears! Highly recommended!

  • This hits the mark

I think you had an idea in mind and to got there. That being said, it feels like a bit of a one-trick pony. It would be nice to have more "performances" and maybe access to control over the granular processing. The one sounds great I might add and does get inspiration going. If that's all it does, it's worth downloading. Thanks for your contribution.
