The Randoline

The Randoline is 12 layers of double stringed instruments sampled over 3 octaves, stacked, randomized and processed to create a moving, pad-like instruments.

The story

I initially created a couple of samples for the Global Swarm competition and used them in a personal composition. I then decided to expand this idea and turn it into a full instrument as I liked the sound so much.
At the base of this is an Mandolin of course, an Irish Bouzouki, a Cuatro, Egyptian Oud, a doubled up Cello (to mimic double strings) and a couple more stringed instruments.
The result is this ethereal moving pad with some basic UI controls for tone and adjusting the sound to your liking.

  • Bassy glimmers!

As you may already have got from its title, this instrument features a mandoline that plays "random" notes that jump octaves in an irregular manner. It is sampled key by key, spread in a total of 3 octaves, and honestly it sounds amazing. The overall sound signature is bassy and punchy, but if you are not into that you can easily EQ some lower frequencies out.

In the GUI you will find a low-pass filter though, along with an attack and release knobs that are great for such instruments. It's a very nice sound overall, and I recommend adding some splosh with some external reverb!
