Upright Bass Drum

A Tom Waits inspired percussion instrument created from a double bass.

ByJoshua Meltzer

The story

I was given an old Upright Bass from the 50’s, that was in rough shape. I thought I might have it worked on to get playable but the endeavor proved not to be worth it. I decided to sample it in a different way. I used it as a drum set . I put snares on it, used a bass drum pedal, mallets, hit the strings, made fret noises , etc. I think the result was pretty earthy with some pretty indistinguishable sounds (my favorite!) I was going for the “What would Tom Waits like” kind of direction on this, assuming he actually used Kontakt instruments 🙂

  • This is Pianobook all over!

This is Pianobook all over! The idea of taking something simple but exploring it in a new or different way. The percussion sounds here are top notch and very easily playable. It's also very easy to implement into most styles of 'filmic' music. Bravo Joshua!

  • Wonderfully original

What an imaginative, creative library this is! Very expressive, very different. This is top-notch.

  • Meltzer did it again

Not surprised to see that this is a Meltzer creation. This is one of my favorite libraries on the site and probably my favorite percussion library. Theres a-lot of sounds to choose from and they're all so cool and organic sounding. They're very different too, not sounding the same as any other percussion library. I love the scrapes and also the low hits that can be used as kick drums. I named this Helios Drum Kit in my folder because it reminds me of his sometimes weird organic foley drum sampling. If you don't know his music check it out, you'll be glad you did. His newer stuff doesn't have much drums but go a few years back in his catalog. This instrument is so fun and i can't wait to use it in a project
