Box Violin Swells

A homemade box violin by Dave Hilowitz.

The story

In October 2019, I built several violins, including this one out of a long paintbrush box. Since then, I’ve used it on countless tracks and a couple film scores. This is an ensemble patch featuring 8 layers–my take on a classic “swells” articulation.

Reviews

  • String magic in a box!

Nothing is missing from this little magic box. I LOVE IT. At first I picked the "swells" patch and I was like "I wish there was a patch without the sample dying"... And then I said, wait, there's a sustain patch. And that was it, I was sold. Excellent UI, excellent sound, very well done.

  • How many notes?

    The sustains have 10½ octaves(!).
This is obviously a marvelous instrument and it's amazing that you built it. Stradivari? No, thank you. We've got a Hilowitz!

  • Characteristic and warm violin sound

Very nice quality! Not a normal violin sound but it has more texture to it. Very good sound out of the box.
