Sansula Matrix
A textural, aleatoric instrument created from a Hokema Sansula

The story
I sampled this Hokema Sansula (kalimba) but besides a traditional sample instrument, I wanted a more textural, aleatoric Kontakt instrument.
I “scanned” the samples, randomly forward or backwards with different starting points, in a fixed tempo (whole until sixteenth note), using a self-developed Max-for-Live instrument in Ableton. See the video linked below.
The obtained loops are arranged in a matrix in the GUI (note regions versus note lengths) and the loops adapt to the DAW tempo. The matrix can be randomized using the randomize button or keyswitch (red). In this way different notes have different rhythm. Identic rhythm can be selected using the buttons at the bottom of the matrix or keyswitches (yellow). You can also change the matrix by clicking on the individual matrix buttons. The traditional sampled Sansula (three velocity ranges) is also included as a separate instrument.

Great for happy accidents and ideas
I love the GUI and idea behind the rhythmic grid. Additionally, the creator is very receptive and modified specific behaviours that would improve the instrument on my request. Highly recommended.
The best Kalimba library with randomizing function!!
Sound is perfect! I love kalimba. Moreover, the GUI is amazing. It has a randomizing function just like evo grid. It does create interesting effects and it is a lot of fun to play with. Thank you so much for the inspiration!!
Unexpectedly great!
Except for some very minor noise issues that can build up quickly if you play with very wet settings, this kalimba is totally worth it. The main instrument itself is cool and pretty customizable, but it suffers from the noise I mentioned, though only audible in very wet settings.
The matrix is a fantastic tool to play around and generate some ideas, especially by using the sound of a warm kalimba like this. I'm impressed because it's pretty rare to find it in free instruments - I personally have seen it only in premium ones.
