Tongue Drum

Metal tongue drum.........

The story

I was given this tongue drum as a Christmas present from my Mum about three years ago. It was actually one of the first instruments I tried to sample, a muted version that didn’t go as well as I would have liked. I may revisit the muted one in the future. While studying for my Masters in Sound for the Moving Image in early 2021, I was looking for sounds to create a TV theme and decided to rerecord the samples for this. There are 2 round robins and 3 velocity layers.

GUI:
Attack – great for creating a nice glassy effect.

Release – give a little more control over the long sustain of the instrument.

Reverb – The samples are dry with an optional reverb knob. However, the instrument sustains well so some may not feel reverb is necessary, I typically add some though.

High pass – The lower range is a little boomy with this instrument, this can help to give a little control over this, I would personally use a separate EQ, however.

Low pass – Ideal with creating a mellower sound.

  • Tongue Drum - Simply

This is a simple patch that gives a percussive sound with a small reverberant tail. This sounds well on its own but because of its higher register, it can allow for unconventional uses such as percussive hits and pads. The sound quality is good and while there doesn't seem to be room sound removal this isn't an issue. It's very plug-and-play with 5 knobs on the GUI and an expansive key range. I'll be playing with this patch more in the future, great work!
