The story

I’ve been playing the cello for more or less 6 years now. And it opened a whole new world for me. I play in string ensembles and a big symphony orchestra. Through music, I made many new friends, and at some point I started to compose my own music. As I grew from pint-sized to Tarzan-sized, I had to switch cellos. And sometimes I had to get a new one because some kids used my instrument as a trampoline. Now I got a new cello again, which I like a lot better than the cellos before this one (all rented), and I want to share it with you.
So here it is:

The Short Harmonics Cello was recorded with a Sennheiser e641. It’s the first time I did any code writing, so I kept the instrument simple. It has several knobs for effects like reverb or delay, and you can adjust the expression via modwheel. And I’m thinking about a cello-series including legato, pizzicato and other techniques.
It’s a bit detuned to give it a little bit of a sad feeling. I hope you like it ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Immersive, cinematic sound

Immersive sound, perfect for cinematic compositions. It only has a single articulation but even with its limitations is a great instrument that sounds really good. Great job BelaZee!

  • Something interesting is going on here!

At first I thought of this as very simple and kind of limited. Then I realised you can create easily some nice thriller-like melodies - you know, the ones that probably play in a kind of creepy walking cue in a thriller film.

Unfortunately the higher velocity samples suffer from a long release tail full of noise that continues for around 6-7 seconds, which is almost cruel... I'd love to have the option to control the release in general to make it a little more staccatissimo.

The GUI is near-perfect and it offers many settings for you to mess with and find your own sound.

  • Great sounding cello

    - on an articulation you probably don't already have in the box. This thing is a valiant effort in closing the near-infinite gap of string instrument articulations and extended techniques yet to make their way to software. As already discussed, there is a little bit of envelope timing / noise fixing to play with but sonically this is cool and worth a grab!

  • Needs work

The recording is good and I want more from this library but it seems to only have 1 round robin and isn't very deeply sampled. I wish that there were longer sustains but it is nice for what it is, however not substantial enough for my taste.

  • Really good sound but kind of limited

I really like the overall sound of this, it has that organic scratchy cello sound that i really love and feel like is missing from alot of string libraries. Its kind of limited though because of the note length. It would have been nice to get more dynamics and round robins for added realism especially for fast passages which this library would be good at. The release can be set kind long for these patches so you might want to tweak this. i wish it was more responsive to the midi note length like in other strings short articulations but for a free instrument its still really nice.
