The story

I’ve had this small spinet piano for a few years and honestly haven’t played it much. I’m mostly a guitar player and I’ve been too lazy to get someone to tune it. Even now after getting it tuned about a month ago, it went back out of tune pretty quickly in the upper keys. I love how it sounds though because it has a very nostalgic charm to it like I grew up with this piano. Hard to explain in technical terms and I didn’t grow up with any pianos so I imagine I’ve just heard pianos like this before somewhere. Recording it has always been a challenge, not just for being out of tune, but capturing the “nostalgic charm” I’m hearing in the room never quite translated through a microphone. Until I got a ribbon mic from Ohma World (see picture). That microphone sounds incredible and they even let you pick out the design of it! (Specifically the colors and logo) #notsponsored and all, but I really recommend checking them out

The obvious thing to do when I started recording my spinet with my new ribbon mic was to make a sampled instrument so it’s always in tune with a great mic. It’s pretty simple as far as Kontakt instruments go with 3 round robins, 3 velocities, recorded on 1 mono microphone, and reverb and echo levels

Controls:
Volume: overall volume of the instrument
Echo: slap back echo with lots of feedback
Verb: an IR of my spring reverb (a KNAS Moisturizer)

Honestly I recommend using your own plugins for effects like echo/reverb, but if people want me to include more options, let me know!

If you have any ideas for improving the Kontakt instrument or use it in any of your music, please let me know! I’m on the Pianobook Discord server or you can email me at spencer@somaaudio.com
